      @mitu Thank you, youve made a grown man very happy

      im not sure how this interacts with retroarch overrides as no video mode was selected in the override .cfgs the log file referenced but all i did was updated retroarch from binary to latest 1.16.0, loaded the same rom and i got a msg on lower left configuration override loaded but can change video mode from the runcommand launch menu and it now works.

      i can now can select 50zh video mode and get smooth scrolling on PAL and on Amstrad CPC :)

      @dankcushions Thanks for your very elaborate answer! I naïvely assumed that at least the region detection was straightforward (e.g. some flag in the internal ROM header), but after some reading it seems that the region was indeed only "coded" physically by incompatible cartridge sizes. Some bytes of code and data saved I guess.

      I'll just manually set the 50Hz rate. I'm definitely grateful that it can be done conveniently in a few seconds!

      Unless you're connecting your Pi using a composite cable to your TV (which seems unlikely, since that won't do 1080), NTSC/PAL is not an issue for TV's video resolution.
      Use raspi-config to choose your desired video resolution globally or modify your /boot/config.txt according to the Raspbery Pi video doc.

      @Amplifuzz

      You don't really need a ton of custom video modes, since the resolution stays the same, and you only have seven or so different refresh rates at maximum to deal with. Two config lines like "lcd_native_res=1920x1080" and "lcd_range=50-60" or whatever the monitor supports would cover it.

      on groovymame, sure, but raspberry pi only understands discreet videomodes. you have to tell it when you want to use a new videomode. in retropie, using the runcommand, you would have to add each videomode to the list, and when selected they would have to call the api command i linked above (since these aren't videomodes in the raspberry pi's limited list of videomodes)

      I'm afraid that the whole 'snap to the closest available refresh rate once the native ROM refresh is detected' part is best handled by the emulator itself, as well.

      agreed, but for that to happen someone woudl have to update CRT switchres (or something similar) in retroarch such that it can communicate with the pi's custom videocore API calls (see the link above).

      i'm told that you can get crt switch res to work with pi, but only under X. we don't use X in retropie. there's some info on this on the (huge) crt switch res thread over at libretro: https://forums.libretro.com/t/retroarch-native-crt-support

      no m8...you were dead right.
      I've switched to nachos ready made 128gb image and it uses different emulators for different games....
      my 2 faves wonderboy and pac land use ir-mame2003 and the video has no tearing at all.
      just need to swap the button setup and I'm all set....have tried every key on the keyboard and it doesnt seem to have a button to bring the menu up for swapping buttons around like advmame.
      thanks for the help...really appreciate it.

      @windale
      I recently played through Robocop using lr-fbalpha (0.175 romset) and I didn't notice any speed issues (but I'm not sure if I would noticed 57.4 vs 60 on that particular game). I am interested to see if anyone knows how to change the refresh rate in Mame2003.

      @dankcushions , I will look into this. The thread may be misleading because it may not be a refresh rate issue, only what I suspected to be.
